Giotto, The Last Communion of St. Mary Magdalene

1309
Fresco
Mary Magdalene Chapel, Basilica of St. Francis, Assisi, Italy

This panel is part of the Mary Magdalene cycle in the lower level of the church. It is most likely Giotto's work, but for questions about the attribution see Brooke, 433.

Following the story in the Golden Legend, the panel shows the angels carrying the saint to Maximin's church. There the clergy watch while she kneels to receive her last communion.

The stone block behind Maximin is an altar – note the crucifix standing on it.
